Irish American Writers & Artists Honor Pulitzer Prize Winner William Kennedy
Speaker Christine Quinn Joins Noted Actors and Writers on O’Neill Day in NYC
On Friday evening, October 16, Eugene O’Neill’s birthday, Irish American Writers and Artists, Inc (IAW&A) will present Pulitzer Prize-wining author William Kennedy with its inaugural Eugene O’Neill Lifetime Achievement Award at a cocktail reception in Manhattan’s Times Square area.
WHO: City Council Speaker Christine Quinn will kick-off the proceedings by reading the proclamation establishing this October 16th as Eugene O’Neill Day in New York City. Actors Matt Dillon and Michael O’Keefe, writer/director John Patrick Shanley, writer/actor Malachy McCourt and other special guests will read from the works of O’Neill and Kennedy. Noted New York Times journalist Dan Barry will present the O’Neill Award to Kennedy, a Pulitzer Prize winner best known for his masterful Albany Cycle of novels focused on the Irish-American Phelan family (Legs, Billy Phelan’s Greatest Game, and Ironweed).
WHAT: The Inaugural Eugene O’Neill Lifetime Achievement Award Celebration, presented by Irish American Writers & Artists, Inc., honoring Pulitzer Prize winning Irish American author William Kennedy.
WHEN: Friday, October 16, 2009, doors open at 6 pm. Speaker Quinn is scheduled to arrive at approximately 6:30 pm with the presentation of the City Council Proclamation scheduled for between 6:45 and 7 pm, when the program of readings and presentations is set to begin at 7:00 pm.

WHY: The Eugene O’Neill Lifetime Achievement Award Celebration, is the signature event of Irish American Writers & Artists, Inc. a non-profit organization created to celebrate the achievements of Irish American writers and artists, past and present and to highlight, energize and encourage Irish Americans working in the arts. Founding board members include writers Peter Quinn, TJ English, Pete Hamill, Malachy McCourt, Mary Pat Kelly, Michael Patrick MacDonald and Celtic singer/songwriter Ashley Davis.
